The digestive system's tubular, elongated organ that joins the throat and stomach is called the esophagus, sometimes spelled oesophagus in the past. Food passes through the esophagus before entering the stomach to begin further digestion. It passes via the diaphragm, the front of the spinal column, the heart, and behind the trachea before entering the stomach. The cervical, thoracic, and abdominal anatomical parts make up the esophagus. The cricopharyngeus marks the start of the cervical segment, which ends at the suprasternal notch. This section is connected to the trachea by loose connective tissues, and it is located directly behind it. The esophagus is connected to the bodies of the sixth through eighth cervical vertebrae posteriorly by prevertebral fascia. The sixth cervical vertebra's left side is home to the thoracic duct. In the lower neck, lateral to the esophagus are the carotid sheath and the lower poles of the lateral thyroid gland.
