A pill-sized camera is used during a capsule endoscopy to visually inspect the middle of the gastrointestinal system, which includes some of the small intestine. A tiny capsule, about the size of a big vitamin tablet, is swallowed during a capsule endoscopy operation. A tiny wireless camera that takes photographs as the capsule travels through the small intestine is embedded inside the capsule. Images are sent to a recorder that is attached to a belt around your waist. The images are recorded and saved for subsequent review and interpretation by an expert. It could be necessary to take a laxative before having a capsule endoscopy. Depending on whether you undergo a procedure, you may also get instructions for fasting the day before or the day of the operation. Adhesive sensors will be applied to your belly prior to the surgery, which is performed in our Medical Procedures Unit, and the recording equipment will be belted to your waist. A glass of water will then be supplied to you to aid in swallowing the pill. The capsule won't make any noise as it passes through your system.
