Hepatology is derived from the Ancient Greek words "hepar" or "hepatic," which means "liver," and "ology," which means "the study of a particular." The study of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and bile ducts, as well as the treatment of related illnesses, are the focus of the medical specialty of hepatology. 'Liver specialists' is another term for hepatologists. Hepatology has changed over time from being viewed as a specialization of gastrointestinal to becoming a specialist unto itself. Hepatology primarily studies the liver, whereas gastroenterology studies the entire digestive system and problems associated with it, including the colon, anus, intestine, stomach, and liver, among other organs and functions. Thanks to increased knowledge of the "subspecialty" itself and technological advancements in the study and treatment of the liver, hepatology is a discipline that is quickly growing. Few official offshoots from it as a whole exist because it is still relatively new to being recognized as a distinct specialty, though pediatric hepatology is an important field of research.
